LANs

Local Area Networks, or LANs, provide the most immediate benefit to the professional practice or the small to medium-size business. These networks allow users to share applications, data, printers, and communicate through e-mail. Configurations range from simple peer-to-peer implementations (which can often be set up using the equipment and software already in place) to more sophisticated and secure client-server systems, which require a network operating system and one or more dedicated servers.

A local area network increases productivity with sharing of applications (word processors, spreadsheets, email, etc.) and information, allowing users to work as an entity or in separate groups to collaborate and coordinate their work. Data that is sensitive and difficult to replicate can be protected by implementing system permissions, sharing, or other methods of security.

Network administration software can manage the routine tasks of data management. The more sophisticated LAN implementations can monitor virtually every aspect of the network, allow for centralized installation of software, track versions and licenses, and reduce the training and support burden to staff.

WANs

Wide Area Networks, or WANs, permit interconnection of individual computers or computer networks between remote locations. Connection can be accomplished by modem, Internet, wireless, and satellite.
